The publishing software knkPublishing has successfully gone live at Barbour Publishing.

“With knkPublishing we now have a future-focused publishing solution that supports our company mission as well as our business plan”, states Mary Burns, CEO and president of Barbour Publishing. “We chose knkPublishing because of its flexibility and wide range of publishing functionalities. It enables us to efficiently implement innovative business models and launch new products, as we plan to expand our direct consumer business, sell subscription products and other digital products in the future.”

In the first project phase, knkPublishing has gone live in the following areas: General Ledger and Financial Reporting, Rights and Royalties, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Sales and Accounts Receivable (AR), Purchasing and Accounts Payable (AP) and Inventory Management.

Further project phases to implement Budgeting, Book Production and Project Workflow Management to fully replace the current Bookmaster system are planned.

Barbour Publishing uses knkPublishing as a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution in the cloud in order to outsource technical tasks such as server management.

“The key success factor for this project was the close collaboration between the Barbour project team and knk’s North American implementation team”, states Ralf Butterman, the knk project manager. “Throughout the whole project, Barbour’s key users were very committed to the project and took care of important project tasks themselves such as data migration. At the same time, the project really benefited from our experienced knk implementation team. Their in-depth knowledge of the publishing industry and first-hand experience with other publishing solutions was one of the success factors and helped us in the project greatly.”

“Many publishers that we speak with have similar requirements to Barbour Publishing”, states Jason Spanos, Chief Revenue Officer of knk Software LP. “There is a strategic trend towards insisting upon out-of-the-box functionality in business software instead of turning to custom programming to meet these needs. This can be challenging to find, because one of the primary drivers mandating such a change is the need for additional flexibility. Also, publishers must keep up with ever-changing markets and customer needs – this is far easier if your system is interoperable with other systems and allows for easy exchange of crucial business data. We are very proud that we can support Barbour in their mission.”
